What Is Gambling State Planning?
Gambling state planning is a practical pre-play routine: decide how much money and time you can safely spend, define the conditions that mean you should stop, and record what actually happens. The aim is to make decisions while calm rather than during a game or betting session.
It is not a strategy for improving gambling outcomes. Casino games and betting remain uncertain, and losses are always possible. Planning is about reducing harm and protecting essential finances, relationships, work, health, and other priorities.
Setting Your Limits
1. Separate essential money first
Start with income after tax, then deduct rent or mortgage, utilities, food, transport, debt payments, insurance, savings commitments, childcare and other essentials. Gambling money should come only from discretionary funds left after these commitments.
2. Set a fixed gambling budget
Choose a daily, weekly or monthly amount you can lose without changing your normal living standard. Do not refill the budget from savings, credit cards, loans, overdrafts, or money reserved for another purpose.
3. Add time and loss limits
Set a maximum session duration and a maximum acceptable loss before you begin. When either limit is reached, stop. A win is not a reason to extend the session indefinitely.
Tracking Your Activity
Keep a simple record of deposits, withdrawals, net losses or wins, and time spent. Review it weekly or monthly. If spending or session length repeatedly exceeds your plan, reduce access, take a cooling-off period, or consider self-exclusion.
- Date and start/end time.
- Amount deposited.
- Amount withdrawn.
- Net result.
- Whether planned limits were followed.
- How you felt before and after the session.
When to Seek Help
Stop and seek support if you chase losses, hide activity, borrow to gamble, miss essential payments, or find that gambling is affecting sleep, work, health or relationships. See our Responsible Gambling guide and Self-Exclusion guide for stronger controls and independent support options.
Adults only. Always follow the gambling laws and minimum-age requirements that apply in your jurisdiction.
